Distinctive Unit Insignia
A gold color metal and enamel device 1 inch (2.54 cm) in height consisting of a scarlet zia with two gold vertical arrows, points up, crossing its horizontal arms and surmounted at center by a maroon Greek cross charged with a vertical gold arrow point up; all enclosed by a continuous scroll with upper section doubled blue and passing behind the rays of the sun, the lower section scarlet and inscribed with the words HEALTH AND COMPASSION in gold letters.
The red zia sun symbol in the background is from the flag of the state of New Mexico where the Hospital is situated. The maroon cross at center is symbolic of medical care, the Hospitals function and the color maroon is associated with the Army Medical Department. The three gold arrows are from the emblem of the Defense Atomic Support Agency indicating the Hospitals medical support mission to the Field Command DASA.
The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 20 January 1971.
